Section outline
-
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is a 15-year plan for advancing sustainable development in a global scale. Agenda 2030 was adopted in 2015 by the 193 member countries of the United Nations. The main part of Agenda 2030 is the 17 SDGs, which set targets, internationally accepted and agreed upon, to be achieved by 2030 in the areas of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. The SDGs are the most comprehensive set of targets to date.
The SDGs replaced a previous 15-year plan called the Millennium Development Goals, which was created in 2000. The Millennium Development Goals were mainly focused on sustainable development in developing countries. The SDGs are focused on all countries in the world, that globally need to take action for sustainable development.
The SDGs include 17 main goals (each with a number of specific targets and indicators to measure progress). In total, the SDGs comprise 17 goals, 169 targets, and 232 indicators.
